INVEST attends the European Universities Alliances coordinators’ meeting in Brussels

On 13 and 14 April 2026, the INVEST alliance took part in the meeting of coordinators of the European Universities Alliances held in Brussels, a gathering focused on the present and future of the European Universities initiative.

Representing INVEST at the meeting were Javier Ávila, local coordinator of the alliance at the University of Córdoba, Spain, and Katarina Živanovic, from Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra. They joined fellow representatives from across Europe to exchange experiences, learn about shared progress, and contribute to discussions on the main challenges currently facing universities involved in these transnational networks.

The meeting took place at a particularly significant moment in the development of the alliances. According to the European Commission, the European Universities initiative currently brings together 65 alliances and 570 higher education institutions, making it one of the European higher education sector’s main instruments for cooperation and innovation.

Among the key issues shaping this new phase are the long-term sustainability of the alliances, the strengthening of institutional cooperation, educational innovation, the mobility of students and staff, and the need to provide these networks with greater stability and a stronger long-term perspective. In this context, the Erasmus+ 2026 call includes transitional funding to support the continuity of existing alliances until the next European financial framework.

INVEST’s presence in Brussels confirms its commitment to continuing to play an active role in the European spaces for coordination and reflection that are shaping the future of higher education in Europe.
